Growing Supplies
The following are various
growing supplies we have found useful around the nursery and/or the garden.
Some of them are specific for certain types of plants, while others are
general purpose. We have tried to categorize them for you according to
their use.
Fertilizers
- Mycor Palm Saver- Fertilizer for
palms, cycads and tropical plants. Palm Saver contains a blend of endomycorrhizal
fungi, beneficial bacteria, micronutrients, humic acids and organic
material to enrich the soil and promote mycorrhizal development in newly
planted plants. 6-3-6 formulation. Use this fertilizer to give your new
palm seedlings a jump start. The mycorrhizae and bacteria required by
palms are not naturally occurring in most soils, so this ‘seeding’ of them
is very important to the plants’ ability to absorb nutrients. Sold by the
packet. A 3 oz. packet is sufficient for 2 gallon pot.
$4.00 per 3 oz pkg.
- Mycor Tree Saver- Same as Palm Saver, except with different fungi
specifically formulated for dicots. A 3 oz. packet is sufficient for
2 gallon pot. $4.00
per 3 oz. pkg.
- Osmocote 14-14-14 (slow release)- A general purpose fertilizer
designed to release nutrients evenly over a 3 to 4 month period.
Excellent for mixing in with potting soil prior to re-potting. Use
is 1 tsp per gallon of container. 3 oz. $4.00
per 3 oz. pkg.
Soil Amendments
- Liquid humates- This is essentially liquid
compost, improving the soil physically, increasing root mass, buffering
salts, balancing pH, increasing microbial activity and many other
benefits. Humic acid may be the single best soil amendment you can use. 2 oz. per
gallon of water. $6.99
per pint.
- Humates- Essentially humic acid combined with carbon and oxygen.
Outstanding for blending into soils prior to planting. 5# per 1,000
sq. ft. $3.00
per 1 lb. bag
- Sulphur (prilled)- Sulphur is used to lower the pH in the soil.
It is also a macronutrient often overlooked. It helps the plant
produce a dark green color in the leaves. It is also an effective
insecticide and fungicide. Soluble. 1# for 200 sq. ft. garden
or 100 gallons containers. $3.00
per 1 lb. bag
