Palm Trees All palms belong to the family Arecaceae. Palms are unique among most plant families in that they typically have only one growth point (spear stem), and do not set dormant buds as they grow. This means that if the singular growth point on a palm is killed, the entire palm dies. Also, palms cannot increase their girth by adding new wood, so any damage to the trunk can be fatal. Palm species are found on every continent on Earth with the exception of Antarctica. Although predominantly found in subtropical savannahs and tropical rainforests, they can also be found in harsh desert areas and cold mountains and plateaus. With over 4,200 species known today, they range in size at maturity from no more than 6" tall to over 200' tall. Within the palm group there are species that can lay claim to having the largest seed, the largest inflorescence (flower) and the longest leaf of any other plant in the world. Cultivation of palms is somewhat different than many other plant groups due to their almost unique growth patterns. In relation to other landscape plant groups, palms are relatively slow growing. A fast growing palm, such as W. robusta can grow at almost 1' per year, while a slow growing palm such as B. armata might grow at less than 4" per year. In spite of their rate of growth, all palms need regular fertilization. More importantly, palms suffer from a lack of micronutrients very easily. Due to their adventitious root systems, they do not have the ability to pick up micronutrients in the soil as easily as other plants. Good culture of palms would include a regular application of micronutrients (3 times a year) and even better would be the application of mycorrhizal bacteria into the soil at least once annually. Also, because of their root systems ALL palms need a well-drained soil. Wet feet will cause a slow and painful death. Palm tree Species Descriptions
