Eucalyptus Eucalyptus is a very large genus. It comprises over 700 species, and is native only to Australia (and surrounding islands). It populates almost every habitat from high mountains to tropical rain forests and swamps. Nearly all eucalyptus are medium to large trees. While some are well-known for their flowers, most have small cream to light yellow flowers that are insignificant to their value in the landscape. All have trunk bark and limb structures that add significantly to the beauty of the tree. Eucalyptus vary in hardiness, from the true tropical species to those hardy to zone 7. Many are drought tolerant, while some tolerate wet and poorly drained soils. Nearly all will tolerate poor soils with low fertility and/or alkalinity. Nevertheless, they all respond well to regular fertilization and watering. |
