Proteas The family Proteacae is a fairly large group, being found native in Australia (and surrounding islands) and South Africa. Proteas are unusual in the fact that they actually perform better without fertilization and will deteriorate with too much fertilization, particularly phosphorus. They all have magnificent flowers, many of which are found in high dollar floral arrangements. They are nearly all drought tolerant, and although hardiness varies from genus and species, some are hardy enough to be grown in Zone 8. These proteas, although not rare in their homelands, are quite difficult to find in the United States. We are proud to be able to make them available to our customers now. |

Hakea bucculenta- Red pokers
Zone 9b (25 degrees) This shrubby plant can reach a height of 12' in cultivation, and is covered with racemes of flowers 6" long in season. Native to western Australia, it is relatively free of insect pests, and is relatively drought tolerant. It requires full sun, or will not flower well and can get straggly. As with many Proteas, it is susceptible to soil-borne disease, so good drainage is essential. It needs a somewhat protected area, as it is brittle in the wind. Quart- $19.99 |

Hakea laurina- Pincushion hakea
Zone 9b (25 degrees) This is one of the most popular shrubs in Australia. It is often used for forming hedges, and provides an outstanding show when flowering. It will grow to a height of about 10' in cultivation, sometimes taller if given enough open space. Like its cousins, it can be susceptible to root disease, so a well-drained soil is a requirement. It is also a full sun plant. Interestingly, it does not attain its hardiness until about 3-4' tall, so needs to be protected from frost for the first year. Quart- $19.99 |
